Schools, colleges and early years settings to close

Schools will close from Monday, except for children of key workers and vulnerable children.

Updated 19/03/2020

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

After schools shut their gates on Friday afternoon, they will remain closed until further notice except for children of key workers and vulnerable children, as part of the country’s ongoing response to coronavirus.

Examples of these workers include NHS staff, police and supermarket delivery drivers who need to be able to go to work to support the country’s fight to tackle coronavirus. Vulnerable children include those who have a social worker and those with Education, Health and Care Plans – a legal document that describes a child’s special educational needs and the support they require.

Children who do not fall into these groups should remain at home with appropriate care.

We will not go ahead with primary school assessments or secondary exams this summer, and we will not be publishing performance tables.

To support children eligible for free school meals, schools will be able to purchase meals or vouchers for supermarkets or local shops.

Fighting Coronavirus and protecting the vulnerable and our NHS are the Government’s top priorities right now. That’s why we are asking schools, nurseries and colleges to close – except for vulnerable children and the children of key workers.

We are facing increasingly extraordinary circumstances, but by asking schools to support our key workers and vulnerable children I am confident we will help beat this virus.

I am deeply grateful for the civic spirit and dedication of everyone working in education, and I will continue to provide my full support throughout this crisis.

Safeguarding children in school.

All children have been given appropriate hygiene lessons and these have been regularly updated using child-friendly language from sources such as espresso daily news.

Hand sanitisers and soap is available in every classroom and children have been trained in hand washing techniques. Children are washing their hands regularly throughout the school day.

We advise that children bring their own pencil case with basic contents to help reduce the risk if cross contamination.

Whole school assemblies have been suspended and classes will do their own smaller assemblies within the classroom.

After School Club will continue as planned whilst the school remains open and enough staff are available to run it. Our extra curricular clubs will end with immediate effect. Parents will be notified of any changes to After School Club via Parentmail.

Parents evening and parental contact

We have postponed both parents' evening and the Spring Fair. We are encouraging parents to contact the class teacher to arrange a phone consultation only if there are immediate concerns that need to be discussed. School reports will be sent out when ready or made readily available for collection from school, more information will be sent out to parents via Parentmail on this.

We will let parents know when these events can be rescheduled.

Please let us know if you or anyone in your family have suffered from any symptoms or visited locations where you may have been in contact with the virus.

Access to work when pupils are not in school.

We are giving all pupils a link that allows them to access many of the resources that are used in school. Details will be sent out via parentmail and the link can be found on the webpage linked below:

Class Resources

Class teachers will create a list of activities that parents can take part in with their children which will be made available via Parentmail.

Staff will keep in touch with their class via Parentmail.
